Using recycled construction wastes as wetland substrates for pollutant removal in cold climate

Constructed wetlands are nature-based decentralized wastewater treatment processes, in which the substrate is an important component, which provides surfaces for biofilm growth and supports the macrophyte. In recent years, recycled aggregates from construction and demolition wastes have shown their great potential as the substrate of wetlands due to their relatively low density, great water absorption, and high porosity. This study investigated the feasibility of using recycling cement wastes from road construction as substrates in the wetlands for wastewater treatment in cold climate by monitoring treatment performance and performing life cycle assessment.
