Public bus service

The IRCA operates Iceland’s rural area public bus service.

A total of 25 routes are driven during winter, and 28 during summer, with an additional three routes currently in development.

The IRCA manages the bidding process for rural routes, with the goal being to establish a comprehensive route system of public buses all over the country.

Total passenger numbers

The number of passengers on rural public transport has seen a decrease in the last ten years.

The years of 2020 and 2021 understandably saw a large drop in the number of total rural public transport passengers. The same is applicable to all other public transport operators, i.e. those who run the country’s various municipal bus services.
