27 March 2025Conferences on car fires and tunnel safety
RISE, the Swedish government research institute and the largest research institute in the Nordic countries, is hosting two conferences that will be held from 7 to 11 April at the Hilton Hotel in Reykjavík. These are FIVE – the International Conference on Fires in Vehicles and ISTSS – the International Conference on Safety and Security in Tunnels. Bergþóra Þorkelsdóttir, Director General of the Icelandic Road and Coastal Administration, will give an opening speech at the conferences.
FIVE – International Conference on Fires in Vehicles. 7–8 April 2025, Reykjavík
The aim of the conference is to share knowledge about fires in vehicles, both on-road, off-road and in rail systems. Since many fire-related problems are common between different types of vehicles, the solutions may also be similar.
The conference is attended by a large number of foreign scientists, regulators, test engineers, rescue workers, suppliers, manufacturers, operators, insurance company representatives.

The conference is considered one of the leading conferences on safety and security in tunnels and other underground spaces. Tunnels, car parks, subways and mines are increasingly important parts of the global infrastructure. In addition, new challenges are emerging due to new energy sources that can cause hazards. At the same time, digital technology offers new opportunities for innovation.
The conference is attended by experts in the fields of safety, fire protection, security, transportation, risk management, emergency management, design, operation and research in underground spaces.
