Improved traffic safety at the intersection of Hringbraut and Njarðargata

The Icelandic Road and Coastal Administration, in collaboration with the City of Reykjavík, is working on preparing road safety improvements at the intersection of Hringbraut and Njarðargata, as well as at bus stops and the pedestrian crossing on Njarðargata at Sturlugata. Hringbraut and Njarðargata are under the road maintenance of the Icelandic Road and Coastal Administration.

The aim of the changes is to increase pedestrian and cyclist safety through the following measures:

  • Raise pedestrian crossings over overpasses to the level of sidewalks to improve pedestrian and cyclist access and reduce vehicle speeds.
  • Improve street lighting to increase pedestrian visibility.
  • Update bus stops on Sturlugata in accordance with universal design and improve pedestrian crossing safety.
  • Set up accent surfaces and guide lines for the visually impaired.
  • Improve pedestrian paths in traffic islands to reduce the risk of falls.
