The Icelandic Road and Coastal Administration introduced a new reporting system in February 2023. Recently, the system received its 10,000th report after 1,113 days in operation. This corresponds to an average of nearly nine reports per day.
The reporting system has proven to be a valuable tool for gathering feedback and information from road users, helping to improve service, safety, and maintenance across the road network.

Reports are received both through the “How can we help?” section on the Icelandic Road and Coastal Administration’s website and via the Traffic Information Service helpline (1777), where monitoring and service staff register reports that cannot be resolved immediately.
The scope of the system is broad, as the reports cover a wide range of topics related to the Administration’s activities. A significant portion concerns whether road users are able to travel safely between locations, but many inquiries also relate to road infrastructure, and a notable number involve damage claims. Public transport matters are also represented in the system, and the communications team receives a variety of questions from engaged citizens—ranging from the progress of construction projects to more unusual topics, such as the possible involvement of elves in road building.
Most reports, however, are directed to the Administration’s service stations, whose teams work on-site maintaining the road network—repairing potholes, fixing roadside markers, and carrying out other essential tasks. The public plays an important role in this process by reporting issues such as newly formed potholes, missing or damaged markers, and other maintenance needs.
