Wave buoys

In the picture, two values for a wave are specified. These are significant wave height in metres and mean wave period in seconds. Wave height is measured from the trough of a wave to the crest of the next wave.
The wave height in the picture is significant wave height which is defined as the average of the highest third of all waves. The highest wave out of 200 waves can be 63% higher than the significant wave height.
The wave period is the average time between waves.
The length of a wave (between crests) is 1.56 times the wave period in the second power.

Example:

Significant wave height 2.7 m
Average wave period 7.9 s
Wave length = 1.56 × 7.9 × 7.9 = 97.4 m
